We love to host volunteers. Some of the projects and areas of interest that we are passionate about are:
Sustainable Whole Systems Design
Edible Landscape Gardens
Aquaponics & Aquaculture
Animal Integration and Rotation Systems
Holistic Farm Management
Grey Water Implementation & Design
Vermiculture & Effective Microorganisms
Natural Building Techniques
’Upcycling’ & Reusing
We run courses on all of the above topics at various stages throughout the year. If you are interested in any of the above please email us at email@example.com. We run short workshops and detailed courses ranging from 1 day - 2 weeks in length, depending on the topic and level of expertise required. HappyToes is also the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and spend time reconnecting with nature and playing.
What volunteers can expect
We expect a minimum of 5 hours work a day. We like people to get inspired so that they learn and help. Working hours vary according to the season. In spring and summer, early in the day and later in the afternoon. In winter, the mornings start later and finish before dark. We encourage people to immerse themselves in the ongoing activities as well as explore the surroundings in free time.
Our daily routines include
Planting, harvesting and tending gardens and orchards
Processing harvests- dehydrating, preserving, baking
Other activities include: Hikes and bicycle rides, swimming in the eye and Groot Marico River, Visits to local historical and culture sites, stargazing, pizza parties, firedancing, meeting locals.
Communal life on the farm
As this project is still in its early stages we will share whatever food we have coming out of the gardens and in the kitchens. We eat simply so if you do have any special dietary requirements, please ensure that you bring or purchase any additional food, medication or ingredients to meet those needs. There is a small shop close by for some basics.
We all share costs of groceries and consumables, R350 a week per person (R50 per day). This covers basics like toilet paper, cooking gas, and staple basic food, such as rice, pap, beans, flour, noodles etc.

Accommodation is free, though it is your duty to make yourself comfortable and to clean your room and blankets before you leave, so that your room is ready for the next person.
We are 4km away from a small town so you can walk there if you need anything. We do a weekly trip (40km) to collect supplies and you can contribute to fuel if you would like to join the trip.
